SUMMER CLASSES & COLLEGE PREP
AVAILABLE COURSES
ACT Prep with College Essay Writing is a 4-week course designed to prepare students for the ACT exam. In particular, students will prepare for the science, math, and English portions of the ACT exam. To prepare for the English portion, two texts - Slaughter House Five (Vonnegut) and Into the Wild (Krakauer) - will be utilized. To prepare for the science and math portions, students will work directly with a professional scientist/mathematician/college professor. In addition to ACT preparation, students will draft and complete the essay portion for their college application package.
This course is designed to prepare students for college-level reasoning and communication of logical thought. Thus, emphasis will be placed in teaching students how to communicate the process of solution through effective writing, rather than simple procurement of answers. Furthermore, students will learn successful study strategies by following a well-defined class and study schedule which serves as a study model for success in almost any course. Upon successful completion of the course students will be awarded an official certificate of completion from Adriana Academics.

AP Calculus AB: Summer Short-course is an intensive 5-week course equivalent to approx- imately 2/3 of AP Calculus AB. Instruction is 1-to-1 and in-home. Approximately 2/3 of the college board outcomes for AP Calculus AB are satisfied in this course, preparing students for the standardized AP Calculus AB exam in May 2018. This short course will addition- ally prepare students for courses in AP Calculus BC, multi-variable calculus, differential equations, calculus-based physics, physical chemistry, engineering, and more.
In particular, students will learn: what are mathematical models and how to use them; what are functions and their uses; the definitions and relevance of the limit and con- tinuity; the definition of the derivative and its relation to differentiation formulas; the chain rule and implicit differentiation; how to apply differentiation to min/max value problems, the Mean Value Theorem, optimization problems, and Newton’s method; the definition of the integral and how to apply it.
